It’s Not Just A Logo

SK Logo

The Power of Connection

Last week I was at a Mariners game and had two different people stop me because they recognized my South Kitsap hat. They didn’t know me but they knew the logo and that created a connection. That is the power of identity.

While a logo may seem like a small thing, it carries meaning. Our SK logo represents experiences, relationships, and memories that stick with people long after they have left our schools. It is pride. It is belonging. And it is a reminder that the South Kitsap School District played a role in who they have become.

As we continue to get better each day, we are raising the bar of belief for our district and for our community. Our identity reflects who we are, how we act, and the impact we have on others. I love hearing from people about their experiences as students, parents, or both. They are sharing their story as we are building ours. Because like everything…it speaks.

Literacy in South Kitsap

One of our goals as a district is that everyone is a reader.

That belief doesn’t just live in our classrooms. It lives in our leadership, our homes, and our community. Recently, our School Board took a step that reflects that commitment in a simple but powerful way - they started a School Board book club. This isn’t just adding one more initiative. It is modeling what we value. When our board members choose to read, reflect, and share their thinking publicly, they send a clear message: reading matters in South Kitsap.

Even more, they are inviting our entire community to join them.

Each month, the board will select a book, read it, and share reflections during a board meeting. It’s an open invitation for students, staff, families, and community members to read alongside them, think together, and be part of the conversation.

The first book they’ve selected is The Hike by Alison Farrell…a story that captures curiosity, exploration, and the joy of discovery. Following that, they’ll read Westfallen by Ann and Ben Brashares…a story that invites imagination and deeper thinking. Once they have read each book, they will donate a copy to our school libraries.

This is what literacy looks like in action. We are creating a culture where reading is visible, shared, and valued by everyone.

In South Kitsap, we are not only encouraging our students to be readers. We are showing them what it looks like.

One District, One Community

Hometown Proud

South Kitsap is special. You feel it in our community, see it in our schools, and hear it in the conversations happening across the region we call home. We are more than a school district or a community. We are one. Connected by a shared belief in our kids and a deep sense of hometown pride.

That connection shows up every day through our partnerships. We have a monthly meeting that we call the Community Resource Gathering that brings partners together to support students and families in our district. We have non-profit groups like the South Kitsap Public Education Foundation and the Kurt Wagner Foundation that open doors for student opportunities. We have community organizations, local businesses, and individuals who step into support families. And we have volunteers showing up consistently in our schools, quietly making a difference in ways that matter. None of this happens by accident. It happens because people care.

Our work as a district is stronger because it is shared. We don’t do this alone, and we were never meant to. The strength of South Kitsap is in the relationships we build and the pride we carry together.

One district. One community. And a whole lot of gratitude.
